Yes! That's the difference! Most of today's artists emphasize the structural elements - timing, speed, volume - rather than investigating the human heart of what they are singing. Anyway, Dame Janet always looks for the emotional truth of whatever she sings, which is why she has been so effective in music so many different periods and styles.
Dame Janet Baker has superior musicality and a legato that "Baroque" specialists are far from it . She has a rare sense of dynamic applied with discernment instead of accentuating the tempo which is a characteristic of period interpretations.

You have to remember that Dame Janet was not a Baroque or Bel Canto specialist so can't be compared to Genaux or Bartoli or Garanca. Still I like the way she sings and acts these arias. What I've always loved in her singing is her warmth & commitment. Listen to her sing Elgar's Sea Pictures or Dream of Gerontius to get a better idea of her capabilities. She was - and remains - a deeply beloved musician.

Sorry for the low rating but in comparison with todya's singer this not good (not even ok). But I give her some credit for opening up new fields.
