ANIMAL AGRICULTURE: THE FACTS

VOICE: In 2006, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) had estimated that raising animals for meat and dairy was responsible for 18% of global warming; more than all the worlds transportation put together. However, it is becoming increasingly clear to scientists that the livestock industry is playing a more significant role.

Dr. Rajendra Pachauri Chair of United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, VEGETARIAN (M): Ive received a number of emails from people that I respect saying that the 18% figure is an underestimate; its a low estimate and in actual fact its much higher.

Dr. T. Colin Campbell Renowned nutrition researcher, Cornell University, USA, VEGAN (M): I just had some information just recently, that the new figures now indicate that at least half of the greenhouse gases that are up there now, not that 15 or 20%, at least half and maybe considerably more are due to livestock production.

VOICE: Greenhouse gasses are emitted during virtually every step of the meat producing process, including the three major greenhouse gasses: carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, & methane. However, what is unaccounted for is the fact that instead of the 23 times figure used in most reports, including that of the United Nations, methane is actually 72-100 times more potent than CO2 over a 20-year period.

Professor Barry Brook University of Adelaide, Australia Director of the Research Institute for Climate Change and Sustainability: (M): If you look at these reports they will suggest it (methane) has about 25 times the impact of CO2. But really when its up there in the atmosphere doing its work, its 72 times the impact and that makes a big difference.

Noam Mohr Physicist, New York University Polytechnic Institute, USA, VEGETARIAN (M): Methane is trapping in just 12 years, 25 times as much heat as carbon dioxide does in a century. If you look in a shorter time scale, and say how much warming over the next 20 years is this quantity of carbon dioxide going to cause versus this quantity of methane? Then the methane causes 72 times as much warming as the carbon dioxide over 20 years.

VOICE: At 37% of global methane emissions, livestock is the single largest source of human-caused methane.

Dr. Kirk Smith Professor, University of California Berkeley, USA United Nations IPCC member
Dr. Kirk Smith Professor, University of California Berkeley, USA (M): Sure we have to deal with CO2 in the long run, but if you want to make an impact on climate in the next 20 years, the place to do it is with the shorter-lived greenhouse gases, most important of which is methane. So, of the emissions in the next 20 years, the CO2 in this years emissions will only be about 40% of the total warming. The other 60% or more will be from the shorter-lived gases, most important of which is methane.

VOICE: Livestock has an even larger share of emissions when yet another unaccounted factor is acknowledged: aerosols, or particles released along with CO2 from burning fossil fuels that, despite their detrimental health aspects, actually have a cooling effect.

Noam Mohr Physicist, New York University Polytechnic Institute, USA, VEGETARIAN (M): So when you burn these fossil fuels, you get carbon dioxide which heats the planet, and aerosols which cool the planet. And the net effect, if you calculate them out, comes out to about zero, they roughly cancel each other out. So the warming weve been seeing and are likely to see in the near future is dominated by other sources, the main one of which is methane.

Noam Mohr Physicist, New York University Polytechnic Institute, USA, VEGETARIAN (M): We have a critical environmental crisis now happening with effects that were seeing around the world, and if we want to address the warming were seeing now, the best bang for our buck comes in addressing the other gases; mostly methane...and its number 1 source, animal agriculture.

Videoconference with Supreme Master Ching Hai
With Bangkok, Thailand Center July 24, 2008

Supreme Master Ching Hai: Because meat producing causes 80% of global warming, because of related pollution from various angles; transportation, water, deforestation, refrigeration, medical care for animals and humans, and etc., etc. All kinds of pollution coming from meat production. Its not just the land that they use. Its not just the methane gas and nitrous oxide that they produce, it is all its by-products; theres no end to the list. We cannot rely on green technology alone to save the planet. Because the worst cause of it is from the meat industry. Everybody knows it. All the scientists already reported to us.

  • tranquilocito,

Have you driven a car today? Put on deodorant, used shampoo, worn makeup, taken an antibiotic, or know someone with diabeties? The meat industry is SO MUCH MORE than just meat. 99% of the animal is used and trust me, every vegan benefits from the by-products. Steeric acid comes from cows, and it helps your tires not melt. Insulin cannot be made without cow by-products, so I hope you don't know anyone with diabetes. A vegan world isn't possible. Just think about it.

  • @cbi91 I use only animal free products and not using or eating animal products means you are much healthier than the normal population. So most vegans do not need all those products you talk about. And besides, meat eating is a risk factor for diabetes and most of the diseases in our civilized world. You cannot have luck and health if you are a graveyard for animals. Our world will become a vegan world or will perish. Meat eating is the most unsustainable thing in the world.

  • Everybody should watch this video. It's the very best on climate change I have ever seen.

  • I think everybody needs to watch this.. so they all know the real facts on the connection between livestocks and global warming.. then together we can save our planet from destruction of the global warming...PLEASE...if you care our planet home.

  • @tranquilocito The argument that they just die in their sleep is ignorant, as cows sleep for only 20 minutes a day. The cow’s organs begin to shut down, she is fully aware of the pain, and can be lying there for hours (a stun gun takes a fraction of a second). I have also seen animals such as vultures or coyotes begin consuming cows before they are dead. I do it because a cow deserves an honorable death, not laying in agony bellowing, I would rather not subject them to that pain.

  • @TheOmegaMan1976 ...and when they are old and cannot give milk anymore, do you take care of them until they die naturally? I know someone who does so, but he does not even take the milk from the cows. He just provides them with all what they need and takes nothing in return, because he loves them so much and respects them and does not want to harm them anymore.

  • @tranquilocito Calves have little immunity in the first few weeks, hence, we separate them from their mothers as even the slightest bit of manure or other pathogens present in the barn can cause serious illness, such as bovine para tuberculosis. We treat them as employees, not slaves. They get regularly cleaned housing, nutritious feed, and medical care, all we seek in return is milk to provide us with nutrition and income. You base your argument off of emotion and not knowledge.

  • @TheOmegaMan1976 But why then do you take the little calves away from their mothers to get the milk from the cows? Why don't you return to your original compassionate nature? Humankind has been cheated...I respect the work of farmers, but we all must wake up. Wake up before it is too late! We cannot treat the animals like slaves. We cannot send them to a slaughterhouse. We would not eat our dog or cat. But we should also not eat cows or pigs. It is against our soul's principle.

  • @mrsheilers I agree! I'm a dairy farmer because I love working outdoors, and I love working with my cows. Money is the last thing that comes to mind of all things!

  • @mrsheilers I think the facts are stacked against you on this matter sorry. Unfortunately it appears that you are basing your argument off emotion and not intelligence. If you are attached to your current diet and hate to admit that you are therefore part of the problem, fine but maybe you should pick different battles. Maybe battles where the facts aren't important? Anyway this isn't about you as a person, so please don't get offended, instead please get educated. Cheers

  • Jesus Says in the Bible the only true word of GOD: The love of money is the root of all evil.

  • Visit a farm and talk to a farmer. You'll see that they care about their animals and the environment. Learn why we do what we do and you'll see that it is not a money-hungry, environment-ravaging industry like the one that you are painting.
