I pulled some more clips from the wonderful TRUE story pilot Van did with an incredible cast .. it is about a submarine who seems to have a problem . when they fire through the tubes, they always miss, even though dials & scope say 'on course' .. they are on a mission to rescue some British military people on a small island .. they go to pick them up, however, the head nurse will not leave as there is a wounded soldier there, Van does not want to stay as they will be out in the open . but he does, the man needs blood, one of his crew donates A positive .. there is some fighting on the island and a native is killed .. but they make it safely back to the sub . but gee, a bunch of women on a submarine (back then?) .. Make do .. and they did .. they have a battle on their hands during the trip back to disembark the Nurses & Soldiers .. they are hit . water .. but the story turns around when they find out that the dial is OFF, thus the reason for all the torpedoes missing every time . now they are 'the winners' .. it could have been such a great series .. but then I never would have met Van . for you see, it was done at the same time as "The Green Hornet" was going to 'roll' .. I am sorry that one did not sell as it was really a good pilot and he was wonderful as were the rest . but I am glad, because Van & I have been friends now for over 40 years .. OMG .. We cannot be older than 40 can we? :).. As I said this IS a true story and remembered (now that is something!) what Van told me about it . I shall try to quote ..
"The story on the torpedoes was a true story. After multi-tests it was discovered the torpedoes were all running too deep and going under the ships that were fired at. Once this was discovered the torpedoes were set to run much shallower and the hits started to be almost 100%. The COMSUBPAC then became more successful than the German Uboats."
Van has done so many things in his life, besides acting . helping others .. always ..
Sorry about the bad color:( . but when I got this pilot for Van, through the studio who now owns it .. all studios bury their old movies/tv shows (not tape . as far as I know) in places all over .. the Nitrate films were saved as many as could be . they destroy themselves . this was film . this was NOT the final cut or might have been better .. due to being 'packed away underground' .. was not run and lost a LOT of color .. it was shot in color .. not sure if Four Star used Deluxe or Technicolor or Kodak .. but .. film did not hold well the way they stored it ..
Interesting .. did NOT know that .. BUT .. a show I worked on that was turned down by all 3 networks WAS picked up by Grey Advertising and ABC was told to 'put it on' .. we did/they did .. after about 3 or so episodes shot .. Grey went to ABC and told them 'cancel it & look for another show' .. ABC did .. too many takes to get ONE that worked! .. I shall tell Van that . bet he did not know either .. I am SO glad he wound up doing GH or we would NOT have met!
