Here's a different, lesser known version of Tiger Rag. It's from a test pressing done eight months before the release of the first "official" version, which was forgotten until somebody stumbled upon it by accident in the '80s. This is the earliest known commercial recording by Art Tatum.

  • If I'm not mistaken, this version was recorded on August 5, 1932, while the one on 'Piano Starts Here' was recorded on March 21, 1933.

    If it weren't EARLY Art Tatum, I'd say it was a poor imitator (though I'd watch out!). At this stage it doesn't sound as if Tatum could process all of the ideas in his head, but was 'told' he only had 1:58 to record this regardless.

    You might want to look for the CD 'Piano Starts Here: Live at the Shrine/Zenph Re-Performance' for a real LIVE version!
