[Please read] A timeless classic interpreted passionately as a Mozartian video fantasy. One of the very best videos associated with this channel.

David O. Selznick produced the film "Portrait of Jennie" (1948), based on Robert Nathan's novel.
Jennifer Jones plays: "Jennie."
Joseph Cotten plays: "Eben Adams."

Originally scored by Dimitri Tiomkin and incorporating musical themes by Claude Debussy, "Portrait of Jennie" now enjoys the Mozart touch.

The soprano voice heard at video's beginning and end belongs to the peerless Kathleen Battle.
The tenor voice heard in-between belongs to Anthony Rolfe Johnson, one of the finest tenors in opera history.

A piano concerto excerpt features the expert and eloquent playing of pianist Imogen Cooper. (Additional song credits available upon request.)

Robert Brackman painted Jennifer Jones's portrait as "Jennie" for the movie.
George Lindsey painted the dust jacket portrait of Jennie for the first edition of Robert Nathan's book.

  • This is the type of movie that makes you understand what is meant by touching your heart and soul and it doesn't let go. You carry it with you. It is a shame that there are so very, very few touching movies made today. I am hard pressed to think of one...maybe Green Mile? I am grateful for the technology of today that allows us to still enjoy and "lose ourselves" for awhile in these classics. Thank you for posting this northbreed1.

  • @tropicgal55 People with tastes like yours seem as rare as the "lost" movies you love. Thanks for commenting and remembering fondly this film. "Where I come from/Nobody knows;/And where I'm going/Everything goes./The wind blows,/The sea flows--/And nobody knows."--Jennie Appleton

  • Thank you for the marriage of Mozart and The Portrait of Jennie. Mozart touched upon the mystical and magical in everything he wrote. Not a day passes when I don't listen to his music. The Portrait of Jennie has an indelible effect - since childhood for me. It captures artistic highs & lows. Inspiration can come from many places, but it the end - it's greatest source is in that mysterious place that reveals something new to the world - a la Mozart. Yours is an exceptional video!!!!

  • @teslagirl007 And yours is an exceptional comment. Thanks so much for writing such thoughtful words.

  • Wonderful , just wonderful. Nice work. Are those the actual translated lyrics from the Mozart piece?

This is one of my favorite films and as a blacklisted animator for 8 years now i know what its like not to have inspiration, I haven't found my Jennie yet....haven't found her yet.

  • Thanks for writing in. Yes, those are the actual translated lyrics to the aria. "Jennies" find you, I think.

  • Absolutely terrific.I love this film

  • @boxingfan101 you could say the same for Jennifer. Most young people today don't even know who these two actors are. It's a shame.

  • I cannot watch PORTRAIT OF JENNIE without tearing up.

  • I love this film, this beautiful, haunting, reverie. They don't make them like that anymore.

  • Joseph Cotten - One of THE most underrated actors the US ever produced.
