That memorable day was the 24th February 1957 when Malta played Austria in a friendly match at the Empire Stadium Gzira in front of an official attendance of 17,421 but which was certainly watched by more spectators who found a vantage point in every nook and cranny in and around the stadium.
The narrow 3-2 defeat for Malta against the then strong and respected Austria team caused a stir in the football world in those days. However, our gallant display, as much as the result, will remain cemented in our football folklore.

Iam from austria and i have to say that malta really played good especially because austria was much better in those days with players like Happel, Ocwirk and Hanappi, but they were not used playing on sand...

Great and beautiful memories of Gzira stadium. I spent a lot of time there as a spectator in the early 70's. Performance weren't bad either, we did very well.

I heard about this match whe I was on Malta, our over 90 year old host told us. Great to see those Pictures now, football still had some dignity.

Ta Qali is obsolete, millions down the drain. New modern stadium is needed urgently, Arena style and the crowds will be back. As long as the games are played at Ta Qali, attendence will remain poor.
