May 20, 1966, a 19-year old Romney, whose father was at the time Michigan's governor, standing with pro-war University president Wallace Sterling. To the young Romney, anti-war activists hoping to end the draft — and the senseless deaths of nearly 60,000 young American men — should not sit-in, they should sit down and shut up in preparation for potential deployment.

Romney did not, however, serve in Vietnam. As a Mormon missionary, he was considere "'a minister of religion'' by the church and was exempt from the draft.

But the Republican presidential hopeful spent a significant portion of his 30-month mission in a Paris mansion described by fellow American missionaries to The Daily Telegraph as "palace". It featured stained glass windows, chandeliers, and an extensive art collection. It was staffed by two servants -- a Spanish chef and a houseboy.

  • I have no problem with the fact that Mitt didn't serve in Viet Nam. I wouldn't begrudge anyone the fortune of escaping that horror. I do have a big problem with Mitt being willing to send other peoples sons and daughters, fathers and mothers into another unjust and unconstitutional war. I think if Mitt becomes Pres and we go to war with Iran or anyone else Mitt's sons should be the first to be shipped off to fight that war. Lead by example Mitt.

  • Oh, mitt, mitt, mitt. Keep saying your rich boy stuff. It'll only ensure your defeat in November.

  • It'll be interesting to see if this part of Romney's bio hurts him.

  • It is interesting about Romney here he is at 19 being PRO vietnam war and he was PRO Iraq war and now he is quite eager to be PRO Iran war but even though he was age appropriate at 19 he never went to war just spent his time spreading the Mormon faith comfortbly in France whilst other poor men died.

Now his children eligible to have gone to Iraq and afghanistan are doing the same as the father NOTHING.

  • @love1another777 I agree...

IMAO: I just don't think that a person who happens to have the good fortune of escaping the horros of war should protest against the protestors that don't have the same good fortune.
