The first thing to know about asbestos exposure is that ill effects from this exposure have a long latency period. It is not unusual for someone exposed to asbestos to not develop mesothelioma for 25-40 years after exposure. Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that affects the Mesothelium, a protective lining that covers most of the bodys protective organs. Asbestos fibers that are breathed in become lodged in the linings of the lungs and eventually cause the cells to mutate and become cancerous. About 70-80% of Mesothelioma cases are estimated to be caused by various degrees of asbestos exposure. The amount of exposure that causes disease in people is up for debate.
Similarly, numerous industrial, engineering and manufacturing factories would contain metal mesh blankets frequently made of interwoven metal and asbestos strands, which would be draped over welders and other workers to prevent burns or injuries.
The body cannot break down asbestos fibers. They remain a source of irritation for as long as they are in your body. This irritation can result in lung cancer, mesothelioma, asbestosis, and a higher risk of getting a variety of additional diseases.
Determining when cell injury occurs as a result of asbestos exposure has been the subject of a myriad of tests. One interesting study on point is called, -Interstitial accumulation of inhaled chrysotile asbestos fibers and consequent formation of microcalcifications.- By A. R. Brody and L. H. Hill - Am J Pathol. 1982 October; 109(1): 107-114.
A study of the mortality of female asbestos workers. A cohort study of over 900 women employed at an asbestos factory making both textiles and insulation materials is described. It extends the information about asbestos-related disease at this factory which was previously available only for male workers.
Many of these interstitial fibers were found in te center of intracellular microcalcifications. The presence of calcifications was proven by X-ray energy spectrometric analysis of the inclusions in situ. Clear X-ray peaks for calcium and phosphorus were demonstrated. The authors propose that 1 month after a 1-hour exposure to chrysotile asbestos, fiber-induced membrane injury in cells of the lung interstitium leads to formation of microcalcifications. This may represent the presence of early cell injury in the initial pathogenetic sequence of asbestosis.
With the danger that asbestos exposure holds, it is important to be vigilant and to be knowledgeable of the many associated risk factors. Exposure is the primary cause of mesothelioma, whose victims often don't experience symptoms until many years later. However, by the time the symptoms are felt, mesothelioma is likely in an advanced stage.
Here is an excerpt: -Previous studies have shown that inhaled chrysotile asbestos impacts initially at the bifurcations of alveolar ducts in the lungs of rats. Asbestos fibers are transported through alveolar epithelial cells at these bifurcation regions to the interstitium during the 24-hour period after a 1-hour exposure.
Lack of asbestos exposure prevention left a terrible legacy for the many thousands of workers, which continues to this day. Breathing in of the asbestos fibre dust, which remains permanently lodged in the linings of the lungs, eventually causes asbestosis disease and the fatal malignant and incurable cancer tumours of mesothelioma. The long gestation period of up to 50 years before the first asbestosis symptoms appear often means a survival rate of only 4 to 12 months after confirmed diagnosis.
