In order to reap the full benefits of a virtualized environment, Integrated Service Management is key. IBM customers speak about the benefits they have realized by using IBM software to manage virtualization. Benefits include, dynamically migrating servers seamlessly; minimizing the amount of equipment and electricity being used; and deploying and redeploying servers in minutes.
"Our clinicians, our physicians have zero tolerance for any downtime because any unavailability of the data potentially impacts their ability to provide good-quality care for the patients...

Inttra is part of the global supply chain, and operates within the ocean containerized shipping industry.

Annually, there are over 100 million containers that ship globally. On each ship, with some of the largest ships available, are 6500 40-foot containers be carried upon them, for approximately 237,000 tons of cargo.

We are a software as a service company, and being off the Internet is unacceptable.

Its the foundation to everything that were doing today

One of my happiest days was when we had a brown-out in the data center and the data was able to dynamically migrate to other servers seamlessly so that no one that was using those applications was affected or even knew we had a situation.

So the customer has experienced as a result of the stability and growth that weve been able to achieve, the customer is experienced in always-on availability.

as a result of virtualization on the technology side, we have less equipment, burning less electricity, and therefore consuming less fuel.

The old systems, we had a total of 30 terabytes taking up about 8 floor tiles. With the new XIV, we were putting 80 terabytes on one and a half floor tiles.

When we decommissioned the old system, the temperature in our data center dropped six degrees.

So typically, virtualization is used by big enterprises who can make, who have the scale to make big cost savings in energy and efficiency. For us, its about selling virtualization to customers and making our offerings more agile, more cost-effective for customers and also allowing customers to meet their green credentials by using us.

So we can achieve a virtual to hardware ratio of approximately ten to one. So we can provision ten virtuals from one single piece of hardware So if weve got hot spots within the datacenter, its very quick and easy to move virtual servers and change the load on the cooling systems

From a development point of view its very flexible. You can deploy servers in minutes and deploy as many as you want.

we use IBM management tools. They give us the flexibility to be able to monitor and manage whatever the virtual platform is. It really doesnt matter what the virtual is running on. We can still manage it with the same core IBM software.

Inttra is creating Smarter Planet by reducing the amount of containers and the amount of ships on the open seas. IBM has done so in the same manner on the equipment and solution side.

IBM has successfully come in and been a true partner with us to design solutions to provide for improved patient care.
