Mopeds were popular in the '70s because America was in the midst of a gas crisis. Thirty-something years later, they are coming into vogue again, but for different reasons. Mopeds represent both independence and community. That may sound like a paradox, but it's not. In part one of Peckhammer's latest video podcast, Peckhammer speaks with Seth Bedwell of Seattle's Mosquito Fleet. Seth is an ambassador for all things moped, and he defines the moped aesthetic.

  • great video! great interview a++

  • Thanks! Well, what is really great about the vid is how well Seth articulates the moped aesthetic.

  • most the country will be riding mopeds and smaller m/c's before the oil prices reach the top. I started riding my c70 honda passport again when gas here hit 4.00 a gal.

  • Larger motorcycles are getting excellent mileage these days. My BMW R1200R gets 52 mpg on the highway. That's a fairly economical way to transport two people.

Nothing beats a small motorcycle, moped, or scooter around town, as you implied. I rode a Honda 125 a few years back -- something that could do 60 mph and still get 80 mpg. A true moped is even better. If you run out of fuel, just start pedaling.
