@macieksoft The B-1A was designed in the 1970s as a supersonic nuclear bomber to replace/supplement the (already) aging B-52 in the nuclear deterrence fleet. It was unfortunately canceled in the 70s, but the redesigned B-1B (only slightly supersonic) was ordered built in 1981 by Ronald Reagan. The 100th and final B-1B was delivered in may 1988.
1970s and early 1980s is definitely during the cold war, and the plane itself is based on the 1964 concept AMSA (one of many acronyms for the project)

@macieksoft Also, the fact that the B-1B had to undergo the "Conventional Mission Upgrade Program" to be able to drop anything other than nukes tells you that it was fundamentally a cold warrior. I agree that it only arrived at the end of the cold war, and was a bit too late to take part in the nuclear triad, but the entire concept is very "cold war"-ish... Much like the F-22 and the Seawolf submarine, in my opinion; grand over-the-top weapons programs that would never be accepted today.

@macieksoft By the way, you forgot a couple when talking about cold war strategic bombers.: B-47 Stratojet and B-58 Hustler. :)
