This was my first Rundgren album and the 36 minute epic "Treatise on Cosmic Fire" is a fantastic piece of music - even more incredible since it was all done by Todd Rundgren himself. It still sounds fresh and ahead of its time today.

@Jobeykobra not so much 'Eastern Philosophy' as Theosophy. Promulgated by the likes of Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, and Alice A. Bailey, who wrote the book [in] (1930): "A treatise on cosmic fire."

@notfragile33 As far as I can tell, it's an album almost entirely devoted to the search for spiritual catharsis, a lot with Eastern philosophy. I think especially with "Real Man" and "Fair Warning" it's exceptionally clear what he was trying to say.

I can't tell when one part of this instrumental piece leads into the next one--PERIOD! He put so many sub-titles, sub-titles, and sub-sub titles under this heading that it's almost like he was trying to blow the public's mind on purpose! Like I said, I don't think he ever meant for this to be understood by human minds (which I sometimes question if he isn't an alien in a human suit!)

Back in 1981 my college roommate and I played a trick on our friend down the hall by dialing her phone and then playing the more spirited section of Treatise on Cosmic Fire into the handset. She got really freaked out and then we felt bad. The other side of the album I wore out. And does anyone else think Greg Jennings' version is the sweetest ever?

That is beyond great, headphones are essential. A lot of money goes into making stuff today and some of it is good but nowhere near the effort and attention to detail that is in this. hey I'm another 52 and Todd change the world for me way back too.

@Simona050 Right On-I'm 55-Love hearing that-I also include Tomita's version of the Planets in there- especially, Venus-I'm writing a multiple Movie Project-similar to Quantum Leap, but more involved-I might be talking to you about doing some music in about a year-to get ready for this, read a copy of the book by Jane Roberts, called Seth Speaks-absolutely amazing-a primer for each & every Human Being-Cheers.

Simply and absolutely a fantastic piece of headphone ambrosia.
I spent years trying to figure out the meaning behind the songs on this lp, particularly this instrumental segment. I finally gave up! I'm not sure now that Todd ever meant for people to understand what he was doing on this album! At least Frank Zappa tried to explain his music! And the song titles make about as much sense as the music, it's hard to know what part of this instrumental leads into the next one--"Sights Beyond Eyes"? "The Halls of AIr"? What is that?

This was just great to find. It was this album I heard as a teenager, that changed the way I was to think about music for the rest of my days and turned my classical piano training into a career as an electronic and digital keyboards player and producer. Thank God for Todd and Roger Powell!

Do you by any chance know which specific moog and ARP synths were utilized in the making of this?

Probably most of Roger's equipment was used and maybe some synths at Bearsville studios. Most likely an ARP 2500 for the filtering and percussion sounds, ARP string ensemble, RMI Keyboard Computer and some Moog stuff.
