This is Batsugun running in MAME with full sound emulation.
AWJ (Alex Jackson) added support for the extended V25/V35 features to the NEC V20/V30 core in MAME.
These features (timers, memory-mapped register banking, custom interrupt controller) are used by the sound programs of several Toaplan titles.
Batsugun has unencrypted sound code, so was the easiest one to get running.
V-Five / Grindstormer, Fix Eight, Knuckle Bash, and Dogyuun will also benefit from this once their sound code has been fully decrypted.
And yes, I suck at this game :-)
This footage is from an interim build. The progress will appear in the official 0.141u1 release.

@HarakiriGTR I compiled the latest 1.42 version and got it working perfectly! Thanks for the tip! :)

@HarakiriGTR You're either not running the version of MAME you think you are, or you're running a derivative build that somehow broke the sound emulation.

I'm running MAME 0.141u4 and the game sound isn't completely emulated, at least not as near as it is on this video. Is there a clone version of the rom or am i missing something important?

You suck at this!

@awj9999 Thanks for at least letting me know. Perhaps we shall soon see this and Dogyuun decrypted for the public to play, not now, but soon.

@hairymannnn The work shown in these videos hasn't been publically been released yet. No one except MAME developers is currently playing Batsugun with emulated sound, regardless of what OS they use.

i do wonder if there is any chance of MAME OS X for Mac users to get an update of any kind that'll allow us to get the benefits happening to Batsugun and Dogyuun, because i tried playing Batsugun in MAME OS X, and no go on it. Dogyuun's the same way.

Nice work. ;)
Try the special version, it's a lot more forgiving...

It's so wonderful to hear full sound in the Toaplan game Batsugun in MAME for the very first time, but man Toaplan had some VERY evil protection for their sound chips on their games from 1990-93 with the exception of Truxton II.

that means by 2012 we might have all toaplan games with sound!? :)
