If you strip down your drumset and get rid of all the extra bits for awhile it forces you to come up with more creative and complex ideas for fills. For example if you have a drumset with three toms. Then take one off. Now you cant simply roll down the drums but you have to space it out and try some other cool sounding stuff. I was kind of forced to do this myself because all of my schools drumsets are from like the 60's or earlier and thus have only the basic components.
