As December dawns, the likelihood of wintry weather will increase. Transportation Cabinet maintenance teams are standing by to respond whenever snow and ice are forecasted. Equipment operators know their game plan and pre-season simulator sessions allow them to sharpen their skills before the first snowflake falls. Salt spreading equipment has been tested inside and out and Kentucky's stockpile of 320,000 tons of salt is at capacity. Tanks have been filled with brine solution and are primed to go. Plow blades sporting winter coats of paint have been installed on the Cabinet's fleet of 992 trucks. And after a thorough inspection, plus some preventive maintenance, each truck is set to clear more than 60,000 lane miles of roads. Nearly 2,000 Cabinet employees are prepared to work as long as necessary to keep roadways open this winter. Call 511 or visit 511.ky.gov for updated road condition information.
