  • Boy did I screw up not going into Herky birds when I had the chance. I spent 8 yrs in the US Air Force and had the opportunity twice but passed it up. As good as these planes are, maybe in my next lifetime. I wonder who was piloting? Usually it's the copilot but he seems to be reading maps more than flying. One way or another an excellent video.

  • gorgeous plane...when you are in a C-130 you get a feeling you will NEVER get in any other aircraft...REAL flying

  • @mntbkrnzl My error on the facts. The early H models did still have a GTC but at some point the APU MOD was accomplished on 5 on the RNZAF with kit GTCP85-180L by Kellstrom Defense Industries. Not sure what year the 5 were changed over can't track that data. As best I can tell 48 of the early H models wher retrofitted with the APU. Lockheed at some point did change over the installing the APU instead of the GTC but can't find the data on what serial # it started on.

  • very cool video, thanks.

  • @mlwise24 - this is NOT a C-130E... the RNZAF have only ever operated C-130H's. They were in fact the first customer of the 'H' when they rolled off the production line.

  • It is a C-130E model. You can tell from the GTC (Gas Turbine Compressor) H models moved on to the APU. The clam shell doors at the front of the left wheel well are GTC. I do miss doing low level training. Loved to watch the view and enjoy the ride. 7th SOS 1985 -1987

  • Looks like this plane belongs in a museum, I dont think I would like to fly in it ?
