The early history of the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, as seen through the eyes of its first dean John Beale Davidge. The medical school was chartered by the Maryland General Assembly in 1807 and graduated its first class of five doctors in 1812. The medical school prevailed despite citizen opposition to the disection of cadavers in anatomy classes. The school was among the firs to create a teaching hospital. Today the School of Medicine is a leader in biomedical research, especially in the areas of AIDS, genomics, and vaccine development. Faculty physicians provide state-of-the-art heart, cancer and trauma care.
