Cultural Differences in Child Rearing

I do not want to use physically painful forms of discipline if I ever have kids. However, I think this is partly related to my financially advantaged background. I come from a rich family by most white people's standards. If I lost alot of money, I might feel different. I also hope blacks realize that corporal punishment as practiced on children was once quite uncommon on the continent of Africa, and was a European thing. But I agree black kids often have more respect for their elders.

Hmm, I really can't speak for blacks in this country, but usually when I see white kids who are disciplined with corporal punishment, the results are more negative than positive. In general, the parents do it out of anger/tradition: not to make their kid a good person. Second, the parents don't follow their own rules, and are often extremely irresponsible. Kids are not blind to this hypocritical stance, and thus loose respect for parents.

no what's worse is when the parents engage in the same behavior as their kids. I work in a hotel with escalators and one day one of the bellman told me that a little boy was playing on the elevator and when he went to find his parents he saw his father playing on them with him. When he told the Dad that he could not play on the escalators, the Dad said "I don't see a sign saying that I can't!" What a jackass!
