This research investigates Information Technology (IT) driven organizational change in Sri Lankan organizations by focusing on the leadership aspects. There are mainly four specific objectives of this research:
1. To determine factors affecting success of IT change implementation process and how to improve the effectiveness of the change process.
2. To explore leadership styles currently in practice.
3. To explore the relationship among the key aspects of leadership and change management namely, leadership styles, change management process, IT change process.
4. To develop a model related to the most appropriate leadership style(s) and IT change managing process.
The research involved qualitative methods. In order to achieve the objectives, firstly the research conducts an in-depth investigation of the relationship among key areas leadership styles, change management practices and IT change process. Models by Goalman (2000), Kotter (1996), and Cooper and Zmud (1990) were consulted to build an initial framework surrounding leadership and change management practices. Using the Case Study method,
in-depth interviews and document reviews were conducted for nine leading Sri Lankan organizations which had undergone IT change. Encapsulating the findings, a model is proposed to pinpoint the leadership style(s) that should be adopted within the critical stages of IT change management process in order to effectively implement the IT driven change in organizations.
