Higher top speed = faster? In the racing, the fastest car is the one that sees the chequered flag first. Thus: fastest = fastest lap time. No Group C would have a chance against modern LMP. Not dissing Group C. That's just technical evolution.

But a 2000s car have a MUCH better downforce and tires and they go faster in turns and slow down faster

I think tires today plays a big difference in lap times. And given some proper rubber some of the older F1 cars will keep a respectable pace.

About your last paragraph, that's because F1s are flying low now because they have much better engines and wings

With Audi and Peugeot bringing the sport to a higher level now, they are probably matching Group C's pace - the last Group C cars in '93 were qualifying at 3:25 or so at Le Mans, on a track which was quicker back then than it is today.

But at that time, had Group C cars been entered in F1 races they'd have made the top ten on the grid, where as nowadays they are about 8-10 seconds a lap slower than F1 cars. It's a little difficult to judge.

Modern sports cars don't have the downforce from ground effects (under-the-car venturi tunnels that allow for no-drag suction with the racing surface) that the Group C vehicles did.

Why they said in Gran turismo 4 that Group C cars from the eighties are faster than today cars??
