Here is an old but not antique wind up gramophone..

It is playing Winifred Atwell's Black and White Rag.

I dont know how old this unit really is, its a reproduction unit.

This unit plays records VERY LOUD.

Hope you like it, rate and comment if you do.

thanks

  • yes its a reproduction, but its ok for decoration.

  • I'm so glad that finally i was able to hear an old vintage record playing honky tonk piano. but i think the sound is too bright but still kudos to you for preserving these records. Great tune!!!

  • hehe, thanks

well its a bit bright i guess because of the horn of the unit.

i have another gramo. a portable its not so tinny sounding.

and yes its a great tune.

  • hey awesome. Where can I get me one of them re-productions? and are the new ones on eBay any good? Also, I just about shit my pants when I saw the angle of the needle.... whoa man!! If you angle the needle, it'll sound a lot better, and it'll be a lot easier on your records.

  • hi,

well i have changed the angle of the needle now.

oh i havent looked much on ebay for the new repo's but they are there. this one i got from somwhere else. its not genuine. but made of old parts. its probably from the 60's or 70's?

  • This fake gramophone sounds appalling in relation to what genuine vintage machines should look and sound like. For a start the angled winding handle shows that the motor and turntable originated from a portable, as no external-horn machine had such a feature. The turntable is not level and the soundbox is nothing like an early type at all. I have the record, which should sound excellent. It sounds terrible here. It is certainly illegal to use the "His Master's Voice" name and image in this way..

  • Winifred Atwell made recordings playing "her piano" and "her other piano" which was this dreadfully funny out of tune honky-tonk one.

She played rags in this rapid way, probably starting a tradition that sadly lasts till today- original records and piano rolls show that ragtime was played slower in around 1900.

  • This is a delight to year, but is the machine playing at the right speed? 78s weren't always recorded at exactly 78rpm, I believe. Rags are generally a little slower than this, and if the player is playing the music too fast, the sound would be higher than it should be and sound a bit tinny.

  • When was this recorded?

  • She js really great?!:))!!!

  • These older Indian reproduction horn gramophones (1950's/60's) are a lot better than the more modern ones. This one was probably made with a brand new motor and soundbox (The 78rpm format lasted a lot longer in India than in Britain, so the major companies like Columbia and HMV were still manufacturing portable wind-up gramophones there until the early 1970's) The modern repro's should be avoided at all costs because they use parts recovered from machines that have been used to death.

  • I wonder if the manufacturers of fake repro gramophones have permission from the HMV record store chain (current owners of the Nipper logo) to use their dog logo?

  • This gramophone is fake. They usually have the HMV dog on the horn, and the soundbox should look very different.

  • Have you got a record of Winifred Atwell's arrangment of Flirtation Waltz? If you have, I would certainly recomend putting it on youtube!
