This is a cover of the 1972 funk disco classic by the Cameroon saxophonist Manu Dibango. Soul Makossa is reputed to be the first disco record that kicked off the seventies discotheque craze. The vocal chant 'mama ko mama sa maka makossa' has been borrowed by both Michael Jackson on 'Wanna be startin something' and, more recently, Rihanna on 'Don't stop the music'.
The video features work from the graffiti artists of Brest, Bretagne in North West France.
**** 5 February 2009 ***** - just seen the news that Manu Dibango is trying to sue Rihanna for using part of Soul Makossa on 'Don't stop the music' without his permission. Apparently Rihanna's people sought permission from Jacko to use the sample without realising that the copyright belonged to Manu.
***** 17 February 2009 ***** - a Paris Court has ruled that the action brought against Micheal Jackson and Rhianna by Manu Dibango is inadmissible and will not proceed. So that settles the copyright issue in France but what about elsewhere in the world?
