@MehemetAkir '“I could not take away my life, because that would be letting Helen down. But I would be so happy if I could die tomorrow.” - Peter Cushing.

As for religion stopping him from killing himself. That doesn't seem true, either, as just after his wife died he tried to induce a heart attack by running up and down the stairs. What stopped him from committing suicide in his grief was a beautiful message left in a poem by his wife that told him to ''not to be hasty to leave” until he had lived the life that was his.

Ethical might be the right word: ''I am not a religious man, but I try to live by Christian ethics. Helen has passed on but she is with me still. She is all around. What I am doing is merely existing – longing for the day when I shall die and join her for ever. We will be together again but time does not heal.” So he was not religious, as some claim, merely ethical and a nominal Christian, like most older people of his era. His ethics do shine through as he was known as a friendly guy.

@pookinapooky He seemed to be more spiritual than religions. His communing with his wife on a mountain top is not very generically Christian. I mean, I do not know what faith he was, I will guess he was Anglican, but English people have traditionally been more spiritual than overtly religious.

actually i read somewhere that the reason he didnt commit suicide after his beloved wife's death was because of his strong religious beliefs. He also loved his wife very much that he described living his life after her death was just killing time...he said that his only joy was being reunited with her after death...God bless him and his wife...great peron and great actor...

This is one excellent scene, probably the best in the film. We have John Bannerman (Peter Cushing) using a religious insult to get Mehemet Bey to reveal himself as possibly the man behind The Mummy's vengeful return. Great acting by both Cushing and George Pastell and a real highlight of Peter Cushing in one of his many heroic roles. Thanks very much for posting this.:-)

he should have been knighted as sir Peter Cushing

@CoryTheRaven True enough. In the context of the film.

@MegaUncleDude Except that, in the context of the film, the rational and logical doctor is wrong. There is a big shambling mummy walking about.
If Woopie Goldberg married Peter Cushing she would become Woopie Cushing
