Congressman Paul Ryan, Ranking Member of House Budget Committee, makes plea to colleagues at markup of FY2010 Budget Resolution:

"I believe America is an exceptional nation. It is exceptional. It is the greatest nation on earth. It has done more to bring prosperity, wealth, and growth, and lift people out of poverty than any other nation in the history of this planet. We are a very strong nation in so many ways. We are not the kind of a nation that is going to be defeated by outside forces. We are not the kind of a nation that is going to be defeated by some other country's military. But we are the kind of a nation that if we dont watch it we could defeat ourselves from within. That is exactly is what this budget proposes to do in my opinion.

"This budget proposes to increase our national debt by more than all prior 43 presidents combined. We are going to double the national debt within five-and-a-half years and triple it in ten years. We are going to impose a nearly two trillion dollar tax increase on our economy on everyone in the middle of a recession. And we are going to do this because we think that government has all of the answers. We think that industrial policy bureaucrats, health care bureaucrats, education bureaucrats, energy bureaucrats can better organize these affairs in our lives than we ourselves can. We disagree. We think the strength of this economy, the strength of this country, is its people, not its government.

"We are a people with a government, not the other way around. We believe this budget makes it the other way around. We believe the genius of this country is the entrepreneur - the person who gets up, works hard, takes risks, creates and innovates. That's the spirit of entrepreneurship that has brought the greatest display of prosperity ever in the history of mankind, and this budget puts us on the wrong track.

"We're asking our friends on the other side of the aisle those who claim fiscal conservatism; those who based their campaigns on controlling spending and controlling debt were asking you to help us defeat this unprecedented taxing, borrowing, and spending spree, and lets get back together and fix these fiscal problems in this country, which this budget exacerbates and makes much, much worse.

"We know both parties dont corner the market on virtue on fiscal conservatism. Yes, Republicans clearly made mistakes in that area. Let's accept that, and let's not make them worse, lets' not compound these problems lets fix them."

  • @pheil58 I agree, he should run! Obama will mop the floor with him. He'll start with Ryan's budget busting voting record on Iraq and Medicare Part D.

  • @MyCelticHeaven LOL! The true republican platform is what they ACTUALLY DID when they had full power for 6 years: start illegal wars off budget, entitlement programs for pharmaceutical companies, like Medicare part D and overall double the national debt (to $12 TR) and bankrupt the country. Ryan and the republicans cut personal income taxes for the rich to create an incentive for them to put their money on Wall Street instead of creating jobs in the real economy. That's their REAL AGENDA!

  • It was all those "entrepreneurs who got up, worked hard, and took risks" on Wall Street who are responsible for the market crash of 2008, and subsequent recession. Isn't it great that "big gubment" wasn't there to look out for the people and stop them.

    Happy unemployment!

  • "It has done more to bring prosperity and lift people out of poverty than any other nation." - Factually false.

Several other countries, including Norway, have higher per capita incomes than the US.

  • @ChapinCapitan Those banks turn around and loan that money out at 8 to 16 times the interest rate they pay to borrow it. None of this speaker's words hold truth. They are based upon lies and fabrications. If we believe him we are buying into the national crisis that is being created before our very eyes.

  • What is about to happen is a massive meltdown, an actual train wreck. why? the money we use and think exists is based upon "computer imagination". it's a true wonder that our "Federal Reserve Notes' are even believed to exist. The dollars are generated by the central bank making eletronic deposits in the accounts of member banks.

  • @MsZeitgeist85 but other than that yeah. Those are the reasons I'm a libertarian.

  • @MsZeitgeist85 Tax cuts are not fiscally irresponsible. Every time the capital gains tax has gone up revenue from that tax has decreased.

  • those bloodsuckers on the other side of the aisle obviously didnt listen, i know why, they don't have a conscience.

  • @pheil58 been saying for months
