Imzadi was introduced through the Next Generation series but was then presented in one of the Star Trek trade books as a novel by Peter David. It did originate through the show, and Gene Roddenberry (creator of Star Trek) okayed the Peter David book.

Actually, Imzadi means ,,the first'', Riker was Troi's first in many ways, first to really touch her soul. Like meeting the other half of you, without ever realizing it was missing.

Riker had been with women, thought they had been special, but didn't know how deep he'd know Troi through imzadibond.

Sequel: Troi ends up with Riker again, she issues a klingon mating ritual at him, shocking him... Worf later mourns Jadzia.

It connects them forever, no other lover could give such a fullfilling relationship to either one since they're imzadi. Telepaht's (Lwaxana) sense thoughts, empaths (like Deanna) sense feelings as their own. Because they'r imzadi the feelings intensify.
