@times3pointone4 Using words like "good" and "bad" is categorization as well. Categorizing music by genre just makes sense. It's just like movies, would you rather not call independent films indie films as well? I see no harm in categorization.

Why does it matter if indie is a genre or not? Why does music have to be separated into genres? Music is music. It can be bad and it can be good. I like good music, personally.

Indie has become a term/prefix for music that slightly resembles a genre, but does something different that doesn't fit the box. Alternative wouldn't really be the correct choice because it's used for music with more controversial lyrics and darker subtones.
Correct me if I'm wrong? This might just be my oppinion...

indie is not a genre...it just means you are independent from major commercial record labels.
