Tunnel miners in Peru film rock bursting above a ROBBINS TBM (www.robinstbm.com). A rock burst is a spontaneous, violent fracture of rock. Rock bursts are the result of brittle fracturing of rock, causing it to collapse rapidly with violent expulsion of rock. This release of energy reduces the potential energy of the rock around the excavation.
The Olmas tunnel cuts deep beneath the Andes mountain range. The massive overburden cause extreme pressure in the rock.
