It's just a minute clip that was shown on tv about different influential Canadians. Just little history throws during commercials.

in other words, twitter's impact on how we communicate > contents of what's being said on twittrverse. it's a weird metaphysical comparison.

McLuhan understood "medium" in a broad sense. He identified the light bulb as a clear demonstration of the concept of “the medium is the message”. A light bulb does not have content in the way that a newspaper has articles or a television has programs, yet it is a medium that has a social effect; a medium without any content. McLuhan states that "a light bulb creates an environment by its mere presence." -wikipedia entry 'The medium is the message'

That the lightbulb is a medium without a message, yet it has a social effect. It has the ability to create space in an area at night which would otherwise be enveloped in darkness. Something like that. That's from the Wikipedia page of "The medium is the message"

This guy obviously didn't know how McLuhan acted in real life. He's an arrogant butthead here.

Not ignorant, just practical. And I will ask you to stop arrogantly looking down your nose at me whilst you discuss philosophers and their theories with your turtleneck wearing, Starbucks swilling friends...

I haven't seen this video for a while. I love how it depicts stupid college students getting whipped into a frenzy over some off remark their prof made.

The medium isn't the message. The MESSAGE is the message.

that's b/c this video is made to confuse, not inform, making him out as a harmless, venerable genius, inciting national pride. To relate to his famous quote: Think about the apparent "superiority" of eg recorded music formats. When arguing about whether Beethoven sounds better on CD or vinyl, the message of the music (content) diminishes. msg = msg + medium.

Elsewhere, deeper in MMs writings, you'll find he writes that the medium is not only equal to the
