McLuhan understood "medium" in a broad sense. He identified the light bulb as a clear demonstration of the concept of “the medium is the message”. A light bulb does not have content in the way that a newspaper has articles or a television has programs, yet it is a medium that has a social effect; a medium without any content. I haven't seen this video for a while. I love how it depicts stupid college students getting whipped into a frenzy over some off remark their prof made.

The medium isn't the message. The MESSAGE is the message.

that's b/c this video is made to confuse, not inform, making him out as a harmless, venerable genius, inciting national pride. To relate to his famous quote: Think about the apparent "superiority" of eg recorded music formats. When arguing about whether Beethoven sounds better on CD or vinyl, the message of the music (content) diminishes. msg = msg + medium.

Elsewhere, deeper in MMs writings, you'll find he writes that the medium is not only equal to the
