@thecope125 For part 91, yes. For air carrier operations, FSDO and/or operator approval and testing is required.

VFRPAD is not correct. All 3G iPads have built-in GPS. There are also dock-connector, Bluetooth, and WiFi GPS units available. Personally, I found ForeFlight HD to be a superior product to SkyCharts, but, both are perfectly fine as EFB.
As to MrThecorrector1's comment, he is also incorrect. 91.21 prohibits such portable electronics UNLESS the operator has determined that the portable electronics will not interfere w/nav or com. 91.21(b). For non-carrier, 91.21(c) allows PIC to determine so.

i believe the bluetooth is ok to fly with on as there are at least 2 bluetooth gps models for the ipad.

this is just an amazing app, i have it

I've been flying for decades and I think this is truly great.... My only concern is that this should not be used as a replacement for old fashion flight planning but rather a support for it. too many a time have I seen older and younger pilots alike fall into the trap of complacency and see a deterioration in skill which is a real shame for some of the tech advancements that we have seen like glass cockpits, gps, ipads etc...

@freightdogtales hi, can you tell me where can i get the skycharts for my Ipad?...thanks
-
@vfrpad you seem to be deliberately incorrect or ignorantly misinformed. I have charts saved on my iPad and use the internal GPS in flight.
Haven't you learnt that customers don't respect companies that disparage their competitors' offerings?
Skycharts is available through iTunes.

The last comment is factually incorrect. 14 CFR 91.21 does not prohibit the use of all electronic devices under IFR and the iPad 1 and iPad 2 have successfully completed RF interference testing for numerous operators for OpSpec approval for EFB use.
I created this video to demonstrate how SkyCharts Pro works on the iPad. If you don't like the iPad, that's fine.
