This video shows how to check the radiation levels is your local area. It is a method I and friends in different parts of the uk at the time of the Chernobyl disaster in April 1986. When you drive a petrol or diesel vehicle it consumes many litres of air from its surroundings per minute. This air travels through a filter to remove dust before it gets to the engine. By measuring this filter for radiation it is possible to get an idea of the amounts locally before in gets too high, as it passes many thousands of times more air through it than your lungs could in many lifetimes! Some of the partials will not be trapped by the filter & go all the way through to the exhaust.
The probe I am using measures gamma radiation so will not show alpha & beta types. depending on the make and type of radiation meter (giger counter) you use will give different readings. These can only be interpreted by somebody who understands these things. no radiation apart fro normal background which is used to determine the levels was detected in the south London location I did the test. nor was it expected! so no figures are given, these can be found else ware and from link on my website main page.
