im thinking of getting my dog into this.. only problem is he isnt so good at coming when you call him, especially at something exciting like this lol. my question is do they usually try and run away/escape after they go through the hole?

ummm think you otta slap a muzzle on em before you put'em in the box ???????

Racing JRT's without a muzzle is inhumane. The owner's should be ashamed. Once that prey drive kicks in and they start biting it is bad. I'd like to see the owners of these dogs take a few bites and then see what they think about muzzling.

@mnpd007 Never EVER split up a fight with your hands. First thing your ever taught in dog behaviour. Kindest way is water on the head, even if its just a few drips this works with almost every dog
-
the most humane way to race JRTs is putting mesh, breathable muzzles on them. That way no one gets hurt.

@mnpd007 I've owned, bred and trained JRTs for thirty years. When they get into a scrap, I've had great success by simply grabbing both dogs by the scruff of the neck and pinning them to the floor. One usually has a hold of the other so DON'T try to pull one away, you'll only cause him more injury. Pin them, until they calm down a bit and can be separated without any further injury to either. I've never been bitten doing it this way.

Get the prey instinct going with your dog. Get a stick or small fishing pole, some good string, and tie something that resembles a fox tail to the stick. Then the fun begins: Tease the dog with the fox tail until they get totally into it.
Works every time and does not require food.
Also, get a shove and dig in an area that you don't mind digging in. eventually most Jacks will begin to dig in the same hole.

Everytime my terriers get into a fight they cause serious injuries even in a two-second scuffle. You snatch one up to break up the fight and half the time the other dog comes up too because one or the other has a death grip. Doesn't happen often, but when it does it usually involves a trip to the Vet.

I know many trainers who use an emergency product called a "Hot Shot"
They cost $75 and are essentially a small animal prod.
It sounds cruel but it saves the dogs especially when they are in a big fight and you cannot reach your hand in and break it up. Use the smallest version.
Its like having a small shock and a buzzing noise that scares them. Use it one time and all you need to do is show it to them and they will stop fighting.
They also use this to train for rattle snakes.
