The problem with this video being posted is it's taken out of context. I have her full video and the next step in this series talks about dragging the "driving foot" down the power line. It's not illegal to "leap" or drive so long as your foot is in contact with the ground at all times. I was a fastpitch pitcher for 16 years, 2 being at the NCAA II level. Leaping is totally legal as long as your back foot remains in contact with the ground. All Elite pitchers drive and drag:) !!!
NO “LEAPING” – All pitchers will either take a long step or “leap” out to get better distance. However, all organizations sponsoring girls softball do not allow a pitcher to become airborne during the pitch…it is illegal to have both feet in the air at the same time. That is why pitchers who use a “leaping” style must also “drag” the toe of the push-off foot on the ground until the stride foot touches down.
I can assure you, as an umpire of two decades, your statement is totally erroneous. Leaping during the delivery of a pitch, in and of itself, is illegal in fastpitch softball. "Landing" has nothing to do with it. It becomes illegal the moment the foot leaves the ground.
Leaping of any kind is illegal in ASA, NFHS, NCAA, USSSA, and DSI. The pitch, as shown in this video, is completely illegal, no matter how "it is executed," as the presenter states. It does not matter if the ball is released before the landing, as a previous poster stated. This is illegal. Plain and simple.
Can someone please tell me if this is actually legal in "Little League"? Not Babe Ruth, not AAU, but LITTLE LEAGUE? Please, no opinions- but facts... possibly referenced in any Little League Rule book? Thank you.
