This song helped me articulate my ideas of love as a kid. Its a personal and universal exploration of the helplessness I felt in the face of irreconcilable obstacles to love. Remarkable, as break-up songs go, for its lack of arrogance. Looking back, he's written not one word of accusation toward anyone, as if love's turmoil were an acceptable & forgivable inevitability - a drama in which those which those who leave us are also involved, and which hurts them as much as ourselves. That's rare.

Hermoine Farthingale was not her real name. She was a Ballet Dancer ( observe the way she walks and runs ). She dumped DB for a male dancer. Bowie has always refused to disclose her real name.
