Earnhardts Seat belt sheared. It did not snap. Design flaw in belt hardware i.e. stamped steel end acted as a sharp edge, hence the design change to forged steel (or alloy) ROUNDED edge hardware on current models. This was the reason everyone thought rescue personnel cut belt during rescue. King...know your facts please. Bruce Jacobi, Rest in peace.

Kenny Irwin and Adam Petty were pretty well known drivers....

Are you an Idiot kingof ?!?...Nascar lost at least 7 big names after this fatality (Irwin, Petty, Bonnett, Alexander, Roper, etc) and Earnhardt didn't die because of a broken seat belt from a failure, the impact was just so bad his chin hit the steering wheel which basically caused his head to disconnect from his spine...get your facts straight before you make a stupid comments
-
yeah... but nascar has only lost 2 big name drivers since then as well, and one of them was because of mechanical failure (seat belt snapped)

I know very little about Nascar and Indy but with all this pointless bitching everyone is doing has anyone every thought about the fact that he was in A GOD DAMNED COMA FOR FOUR YEARS!?!?!?!?!! That is bullshit!!! I'd be pissed if they wouldn't just let me go.

R.I.P :(
yeah it was dangerous back then. but the cars are so much stronger and the tracks are much safer since senna and ratzenburger in 94. they were the only 2 drivers killed in the last 20 years. which compares pretty well with other major racing series
