"The Making of Yeghernica" - Duration 9:56 Minutes.
As a legacy to my people the Armenians, I have been longing to paint an artwork depicting the Armenian Genocide with a powerful visual impact, to be displayed in an Armenian Genocide Museum.
The artwork is a composition made of 4 genuine authentic photographs taken in 1915.
For its principal central theme, I wanted to immortalize the scene of a mother and her two children, dead from exhaustion and starvation, on their endless journey towards the deserts of Syria, mainly to Der-Zor.
At the top left corner is a human chain of priests, holding hands, encircling and protecting the Khtskonk Monastic Complex of 5 churches from vandalism and demolition by the Turks. Today, only one partially destroyed edifice remains.
At the top right corner, the deported population is forced either to denounce Christianity or be killed or be deported taking part in never ending, horrendous death marches, leaving behind their beloved ones, lands, homes and belongings and then annihilated.
Just under the deportation scene, Turkish soldiers are proudly posing with Armenian doctors, who are hanged by their feet. Yet another example of an unspeakable torture method amongst many others.
Horizontally opposite, to the far left, is the same picture turned upside down, simulating Crucifixion the symbol of Christianity.
Symbolic shapes are found throughout the work, namely railroad tracks, which were constructed by the same condemned Armenians who were taken in overcrowded wagons towards the desert camps and subjected to death. One million and a half Armenians lost their lives. This is the 1st genocide of the 20th century, yet unpunished.
The presence of the pet in the movie seems to be controversial but carries a message. That is, how much we care for animals and Turks did not even care for humans.
Missak Terzian - Yeghernica - Acrylic on Linen - 6'5"x 13'2" inches - 200 x 400 cm - 2008.
"YEGHERN" means GENOCIDE in Armenian.
I have added the suffix "ICA" as in "GUERNICA", a war related painting by Pablo Picasso.
No Comments, wonderfull.
Proud of you.
