I believe why most atheists don't speak out more vociferously about Islam is because the majority aren't educated enough on Islam and their usually dealing with Christians considering that's the religion of their community. Ask a atheist in the middle-east which religion he/she speaks out more on and he/she will say Islam.

There is a subtle difference in standing up for the constitutional right of EVERY AMERICAN CITIZEN, and being critical of their religion. I mean, we atheists can jibberjabber how much we like their religion, but the moment we would ask the government(like the right-wing wants) to suspend the muslim's right to build near ground-zero, we wouldn't be any better than any other fascist. We got to focus on the critizising, and not the suspension of our freedom.
