I made this vid for my customers who use their knives in the kitchen or game. Simple, quick and easy.

  • i have a pretty dull convex knife, its 1095 steel. this is my first time trying to sharpen a convex and im having a world of trouble doing it. i would like to see a side view of the angle your lifting the edge. i feel a grit, using little pressure, and im just not getting results. i increase pressure and it gets worse, LOL! im lost and feeling quite incompetent. should i drop down to a rougher grit to get the edge started? 400 i feel a small grit, 600 is almost impossible to tell. plz help!

Kelli, have you tried putting some permanent marker on the edge to see if you're sandpaper is hitting in the proper spot?

  • @bindlestitch1 no i haven't. would i just put a small mark down the edge of the blade?

  • @kelli112687

Yeah, just mark both sides of the knife about half way up and then try your sharpening technique again. After a couple normal strops look and see where the marker is rubbed off.

It'll help you figure out if your raising the knife to much or not enough.

  • Other Youtube video's make this crap too complicated.

Thanks for the common sense explanation. One of the marks of intelligence is the ability to simplify - to remove the non-essential or irrelevant. Good job.

  • @hpd707 like Einstein said “If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough”

But it sounds like you want to convex the entire bevel which is a whole different animal. Lots of guys say they have convexed their flat ground knife on a mouse pad and sand paper but I question that for a whole host of reasons I don't have room to discuss here. If you want a true convex then it's best to re-grind it or just buy a convex knife.
