Met up with Brian from the Downey Fly Fishers Club and watched him make a cicada, a really great trout fly, and can also be used as an indicator when nymphing.

He gave me one and on my first cast under a tree I caught some nice largemouth bass. It was originally used for trout and has worked really well for Brian on his trips, but now I know it works on bass also.

If you get a chance to use this fly, please send me a message, and let me know how it works.

Recipe: simply just - deer hear, foam and legs. also a hook would help

  • for the body its foam and for the wings its deer hair

  • about how much does it cost for a cheap fly tying kit like this?

  • i don't know actually, its my friend brian's, but i personally tie tons of flies and i just use a complete fly tying kit i got for $20. you don't need anything fancy, just something that holds the hook well.

  • Ok thank you and where can i get one like that bass bro or gander mountain?

  • hi jag, you can get it there, but they are more costly, if you have sportsmans warehouse there its cheaper, but i actually got mine off ebay.

just remember fish don't care what fly tying crap you use as long as it works.

shoot me an email sometime and i'll help you look.

  • Great work, what did you use as it's body? Thanks! MTS

  • Good stuff..Simple ,quick & effective...No fancy & expensive cutters and crap !!Add a couple of hopper legs & you got yourself a great grasshopper/cricket as well..The deer hair wing will probably make it dive a bit as you strip it...then float back up again
