If you didn't have the chance to drop by on Sunday July 3rd, you missed an exciting and competitive game between the City of Vaughan and the Vaughan Soccer Club. This was our inaugural game between the city and the club. The CoV team was led by Mayor Maurizio Bevilaqua, in his natural striker position. He would be a force to contend with a few shots on goal, one of which hit the crossbar.

The game was a lot of fun, and brought the community together for a great cause; the Vaughan in Motion initiative. The early detection of Cancer is vital to physicians when diagnosing the disease. The ViM initiative was to raise as much funds as possible in an effort to purchase PET scanning equipment for our new hospital coming soon to Vaughan.

The game started with the VSC scoring first, and the CoV answered quickly with their own equalizer. Soon after the CoV moved ahead 2-1, forcing the VSC to answer back with an equalizer of their own. The game went back and forth, shots were fired at every opportunity, some great saves came from both team's goaltenders. In the last 10 minutes, the VSC scored the game winner, which resulted in several frantic attacks from the CoV players who almost tied the game in the dying seconds. Needless to say, it was an exciting and hot afternoon, we were blessed with great company, and great weather!

The mayor thanked everyone who were a part and contributed to this event. If it were not for the many volunteers and sponsors who supported the city and the club, this event would not have been the same. He promised that the city would be back next year, with a bit more grit and look forward to compete on a higher level.

We wish to thank the many contributions provided to us by the following sponsors who were a part of this event, without their help this initiative would not have been the same! Thank you to all who came out to support and watch this historical event!

  • Great photos. Weather was perfect, and it was a great competitive, yet equally friendly, game. Thanks for sharing.
