Simulation of an aircraft controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) accident at the Superstition Mountains east of Phoenix.
NOTE: This is not an attempt to recreate the heading, altitude, speed and impact location of the aircraft involved in the recent accident in this area.
Ive actually hiked up syphons draw and seen the impact site. It is at the Hoodoo's ridge where the plane hit rock outcropings. The ridge looks like a skydivers parachute in this video to the upper right. In my opinion he could of cleared the outcropping if he was 50 feet higher.... that close.
What is the altitude, heading and speed on this simulation?
Safford is 090 from FFZ which would have put him clear of the mountain.. based on a GPS course line he was about 4 miles north of course..the airplane had terrain awareness..but was it on?
Interesting point of view, in that it shows the sudden terrain changes, and how easily that mountain can sneak up on you in the dark. But I'm not sure about the accuracy of the flight path (altitude, heading, speed, etc.)
