Mahmud Kashgari ibn Husayn ibn Muhammad was born in Kashgar. His father, Husayn was the mayor of Barsgan, his mother, Bubi Rabiya Basri, was an intelligent woman. He studied Turkic dialects and wrote about them in Divanü Lügat-it-Türk (The Dictionary of Turkish language) in 1072. It was intended for use by the Caliphs of Baghdad, the new Arab allies of the Turks. He included the first known Turkish map in his book.

More interestingly, his dictionary was found after 800 years in a bookstore that sold used books in 1908 by Ali Emiri. Although France offered him 30 thousand gold coins, Ali refused to sell Mahmud's dictionary. It is still in Turkey.
