After stripping one side of the bottom of the kayak, I trim off the excess strips with a Japanese pull saw and then true up the edge with a rabbet plane.

This series of videos shows the steps of building a wooden kayak using the "strip-planked" or "strip-built" method. This particular boat is a double paddle canoe design called the microBootlegger by Guillemot Kayaks. More information about the boat is available at http://www.guillemot-kayaks.com . Further information about the building techniques shown in these videos is available in the book "Building Strip-Planked Boats": http://building-strip-planked-boats.com/

  • I'm thinking that I would pay for a how to DVD say on a Night Heron from scratch. Maybe take your pick on all your designs would do well. Since books are so expensive and time consuming to produce might give it some thought.

Just need narration no offense on your musical taste.

  • These are great videos! I have been wanting to start a kayak project but had no idea how to go about it. Thanks!!

  • I love it, open source kayak construction... great video, Nick! It's truly amazing to watch hand-crafting and good choice on your sound track!

  • Thank you Nick for putting these videos together. You are very generous for sharing your techniques. I just picked up your newest book, "Building Strip-Planked Boats" and it will be my guide as I charge ahead this spring with my first boat, a Nymph from your design in the book. These videos are a real bonus. Nice work.
