Every day over 350,000 people choose Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) as part of a more sustainable commute.

On January 31st, volunteers with the Bay Area Fair Trade Coalition joined with BART and Tully's to thank BART riders with a free coupon for Fair Trade Certified espresso.

The event was the first of four BART Rider Appreciation Days dedicated to raising awareness about the benefits of Fair Trade for farmers, workers and the environment.

We hope that this event will serve as a model for other transit agencies to highlight their commitment to social justice and environmental sustainability.

It was also a lot of fun.

Thanks to TransFair USA, BART and Tully's Coffee for making this event happen.

  • Fair trade is totally rad, it makes me feel like a good consumer. We have to prevent the conditions that destroy lives, like those of Rigoberta Menchu's family. United Fruit is bad, Foldgers coffee is bad, Nestle is bad. Way to go fair trade to give me a choice!
