In a chance discovery, an entire army of terracotta warriors is found. The first emperor of China had them created and buried with him, to protect him in the afterlife. A group of them is coming to National Geographic Museum in November 2009.

  • the farmer who found the first sight got kicked out of his home and land and with little if any at all, compensation!

  • For instance. There is no Roman Empire in the United Nations. No such nation-state still calls itself that. But China is still here.

  • @SubzeroedMind Usually when a neolithic culture evolves into a sedentary based culture with a written linguistic system. It has become a civilization. Its able to record its own history and its culture for the first time using written documents as opposed to oral traditions. Latin was virtually destroyed by german and ottoman invasion. Chinese however is very much alive today.

  • @Lordofthenipplerings Fair enough. My question to you would then be, how do you define a civilization? Because you could just as well say that "Communism" (or whatever came before that) erased the Ancient China's culture/system. The people stayed the same, but the system's changed, similar to the Roman Empire.

I'm not sure if you can classify today's China as the same or an extension of the old China. Or can you? Maybe you have more info on that one :)

  • @SubzeroedMind Roman Empire would be Europe's best example. But it was overrun by Germanic tribes in 476. And the Eastern Roman Empire fell to the Ottomans in 1453.

  • @Lordofthenipplerings Wow, never actually looked at it that way... but it has not much to do with Ancient China I'd say... Otherwise Europe would be a "civilization" as well.

  • I wouldn't even subscribe to the reasons and hard-labour works to their findings and speculations. They did this with the Giza Pyramids with "slaves" and using logs to move the blocks. youtube video - copy end and paste " /watch?v=D6aEJek3Cw4 "

  • how do they know how many ppl and how long it took..etc..and then say we can only specualate as there were no records/??

  • i did a project on this on this the king was empor quin and this warriors were made to protect the king and some of thre weapong actully fire
