  • Al Oerter threw 240 feet at the age of 45 - a truly legendary performance. It may be the greatest athletic feat of all times. He was like a bottle of fine wine that just got better and better with age.

  • i heard Oerter when they were filming him practicing his throws for a documentary he unofficially threw over 250 feet

  • Without question a movie should be made of this Great Olympic athelte and man. Can you believe 4 gold medals over 16 years!! I mean I can't remember what I was even doing 16 years ago. He was able to remained focused on a sport that (at the time, maybe even now) received minimum to zero funding, no sponship, no TV ads, not allowed to earn any money with endorsements and competed against eastern bloc countries that had professionals in its employ (all or most in the army) . Just an amazing story!

  • 240 on roids or caught a tailwind

  • Legend

  • @danrich64 thank you for those words. speaking as the grandson of al oerter. he truly an excellent man/artist/grandfather/athlete.

  • Probably the greatest Discus thrower of all time. I sure would have liked to have met him.

  • What a champion.

  • is there any videos that show him just throwing? i throw for my high school and want to duplicate his form. having the discus come from behind at the last second generates more torque i think..

  • woo hoo! my like great great grandpa ;)
