A touching drama on homosexuality and its social consequences in modern urban Hong Kong, A Queer Story (which translates into English as "Gay Man at Forty") pairs 2 of Hong Kong's popular veteran singers-actors, George Lam and Jordan Chan together, portraying them as gay lovers with wildly divergent lifestyles.
The movie revolves around the upcoming marriage of Counselor, Law Kar-Sing. Being gay, the thought of marrying Chuen, to whom he has been informally betrothed for many years, strike him as pointless. This does not stop his parents from continuing to pressure him. Chuen, too is becoming more aggressive with her demands. But marriage is not the only problem for him. Pressures come from his career, his secret lover, Sonny, and his aunt. Then there's Law's professor-friend, Kim, who is dying of AIDS. Kim's family does not want his long-time lover to attend the funeral fearing public scandal. This prompted Sonny to take a radical stance but by doing so, only mad matters worse.
The movie features a stellar cast, and combines earnest romantic drama with topical social commentary A true rarity for a modern Hong Kong film.
