In this video, Dr Suresh K Pandey demonstrates non-dominant hand phacoemulsification with Sovereign WhiteStar ICE technology to perform refractive lens exchange and implantation of Tecnis Multifocal IOL in a 45 years old female at Suvi Eye Institute, Kota, Rajasthan, India. Elimination/reduction of preexisting corneal astigmatism is absolutely necessary to get successful visual outcome after implantation of Multifocal IOL. In this case of unilateral high myopia (minus 14 D Sph with minus 0.75 D Cylinder) refractive lens exchange of the right eye was performed and Tecnis Multifocal IOL of 9.50 Diopter was implanted. Based on keratometry, phaco incision was planned at steep axis (30 degree). As Dr Suresh Pandey is left handed surgeon, he decided to perform phacoemulsification surgery using his right hand under topical anesthesia.

About The Tecnis Multifocal IOL: The Tecnis Multifocal IOL is based on the aspheric optic design of the Tecnis IOL (Abbot Medical Optics, Inc.), which was engineered to reduce the spherical aberration of an average cornea. Based on a principle of diffraction, the Tecnis Multifocal IOL features diffractive rings on its posterior surface. The lens provides patients with a near and a distant focus, each of which is distinct. The rings start very close to the optic's center and then continue out toward the periphery, usually with an increasing distance between the rings. As a result, the multifocal effect's dependence on the pupil is limited. Even in the presence of relatively small pupils, this IOL provides excellent near vision.
