I hope everyone enjoys these postings. I have tried to put together a small sampling of videos that represent the best of Verdi and the best of the soprano voice. As with any Verdi music the aria is difficult in its own way. Aida is a part that has many facets, beautiful and devious as they are. 1-5 for Singing/Characterization:

Leyla Gencer - 1963
Sharon Sweet - 1990

I think she's a wonderful singer. She made a definitive recording of The Invisible City of Kitezh, and appears as Xenia in the earlier of the 2 Boris Godunovs from the Bolshoi with Nesterenko.

Dark and distinctive beautiful voice. I had not heard of her before. Hard to imagine a darker and deeper voice for her opponent - Amneris. Not everyone can be the best but this is very good. 4/4
