Process for a design project at the Emily Carr University in Vancouver, Canada.

Here Tobias and I vacuum form three different objects multiple times: a part of a spoon, and the bottom portion of a milk bottle and bowl. The latter two were previously cast in alginate, then plaster positives were made from the molds. The spoon is partially embedded in a board of MDF. In some scenes a rubber layer was added over the plaster to increase the overall size; in others a previous plastic vacuum form was re-vacuum formed (up to three times). All forming was done with a thermoset sheet of approx. 1mm polystyrene.

Of important note: plaster is naturally porous and easily vacuum forms while a plastic positive shape does not. For enlargements with indentations, the rubber must be punctured with a pin or small drill bit.

  • What is this white board with where you've pressed the mask on the form which then has taken a form?

  • @predator3134 It's a sheet of polystyrene (a type of plastic). Very common for basic vacuum forming. Cools to a hard stiff plastic.

  • Plastic is about 1.5-2mm thick polystyrene. My university buys it in large bulk sheets from...somewhere.

  • this is a little over-edited. i'm a huge fan of vacuum forming videos, so i expect a good story-line. i would have appreciated a little bit of continuity in these shots. but a fine attempt!

  • I use to vacuum form for a living . It looks like in the video that you are not getting enough detail. What would help is to drill some small holes around the seams on the mold .Drill all the way threw the mold so the plentom can pull the vacuum threw. The places you drilled should not show up on the finished product. I hope this helps you.

  • need more heat...

  • I want to take the audio from this video and edit it into a porno film.

  • Lol

The commentary can be taken way out of context without the accompanying video

  • LMAO, "Now suck you bastard!"

  • "Come on you mother..."

    Nice, haha.
