You do know that the author is a Roman Catholic herself and did not want her series to have a religious undertone? This making your Dark Years to Dark Age comparison false.

Isn't the death penalty human sacrifice? "Isn't it better that one man should die..."

Except that that is not human sacrifice, it is murder, simply because the biological parents, not having exhibited the responsible use of contraception in order to prevent a pregnancy from occurring (which is an entirely different consideration than terminating a pregnancy), do not wish to exhibit the responsibility to bring to term and care for a human being which they created. For them, murder is far more convienent than any measure of responsibility.

Except that perfection is stagnancy; nothing left to pursue, and nothing left to know. Would you genuinely care to exist in what would, in all actuality, be a non-existence? I don't think that you would. I know that I wouldn't. Human beings require challenges, changes, myriad interests drawing their attention in order to not only survive and thrive, but also in order to maintain a desire to do so.

Human sacrifice does happen: its called neglect of the poor. People seem almost pray that the poor would die or not "leech" off of society. Pro-Birthers (for example) only care for life as long as its in the womb, but after that, they pitch a fit if someone gets food stamps to eat, or clothing from government assisted help.

St. Teresa of Avila (doctor of The Church), in her writings entitled "The Way of Perfection," treats of the virtues that can be gained by bearing false condemnation silently, which is to immitate Christ. She also treats of how it is wrong to profess the wrongdoing of a neighbor, and how we must instead look at our own wretched selves first, and see that we are in no position to condemn anyone, etc. ("he who is without sin, cast the first stone")

I would love to hear from an anthropologist about your theory that "cultured societies choose human sacrifice, but Christianity in today's world keeps that violence at bay." I should add that violence can also be social, economic, or political (difference being its silence).
